Singing at her own funeral

When Mildred was in her 80s, she decided to take music lessons.  After a year of lessons with Prof. Carren Moham, who was at Illinois Wesleyan University, Mildred recorded a DVD singing spirituals.  She also decided that she would have a DVD recorded of her reciting poetry, under the supervision of Prof. Pam Muirhead in the English Department at Illinois Wesleyan University.  She requested that the recordings be played at her funeral.  On August 19, 2012, she literally performed at her own funeral! (See Chapter 12 in “A Black Woman’s Journey”)

  1. Mildred was one of the loveliest persons I have ever met. I miss her and think of her often. She lifts my spirits just remembering her.
